Crime Stop devastated by cop's murder

Mellissa Edwards-Whyte would have celebrated her 46th birthday yesterday.

"Next week, she would have travelled overseas for her daughter's wedding. She was the mother to the children of other Crime Stop counsellors. She volunteered and could be depended on to provide food for the night-shift workers, especially on Saturday and Sunday nights, whether it was her shift, or those leaving other shifts," is how Prudence Gentles, manager at Crime Stop, remembers Edwards-Whyte.

The district constable from Farmbrook Avenue, Patrick City, in St Andrew, was chopped to death on Saturday night, allegedly at the hands of her husband. He is now on the run.

"We are extremely sad. She was like a mother to so many of them inside here, to everybody. She was the sweetest, kindest soul ever and she was the least confrontational of anybody that I know. She was the kindest, kindest person," Gentles told The Gleaner.

"All the children who belong to the other counsellors here, she treated them like her own. If they had to bring them to work she would be the one looking after them."

Edwards-Whyte, she said, took up the mantle of seeking funds and shopping for clothes for the family of an ex-Crime Stop counsellor whose house was destroyed by fire.

According to her, the incident has come as a shock to all, as nothing indicated that "anything the magnitude of this could happen.

"Yes, they were having some problems, but they sought counselling. And what makes it worse is that those who know the husband say he has no history of violence towards her. Those who know him say he was not a bad person," Gentles expressed dejectedly.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson said no resources will be spared in searching for the perpetrator.
