Shaggy calls the hotshots - Personal touch shapes stellar charity line-up

'Shaggy and Friends' is as literal a title the charity concert could have. For the 'Boombastic' superstar, all it takes is a phone call to gather world-class performers biennially on one stage for a single night, to entertain in support of the Bustamante Hospital for Children, curating (at no booking cost) an enviable, festival-scale line-up.

Tomorrow, the lawns of Jamaica House, St Andrew, will facilitate the sixth staging of Shaggy and Friends. The goal is to raise $100 million.

More than willing

"Shaggy called me and spoke to me about it and I was more than willing to do it," Everton Bonner, better known as Pliers told The Gleaner. Pliers will take the Shaggy and Friends stage for the first time alongside his famed recording and performance partner, Chaka Demus.

"I decided to do it, because I realise it's a very good thing for the children. I think Shaggy is an angel in person. Him stand up and is doing something for the kids. I think any artiste would jump to do it, once them don't have an engagement, if Shaggy asks."

Also performing at the show for the first time is soca star Fay-Ann Lyons, as well as her husband, Bunji Garlin.

"We've known Shaggy for years. He's as nice a gentleman as they come. Our relationship with him is very natural. I guess when he was doing the show this year, he thought we'd be a great fit! It was an easy call. If Shaggy call you and says I need your help, you don't say no," Fay-Ann said.

The Hands In The Air singer estimates the couple will be on stage for about 30 minutes "because there are so many artistes on the show - and it's not about the artistes. It's about us understanding that this hospital needs all the help and the assistance. Huge cause and huge rewards at the end of the performance. Even if we're on stage for five minutes... best five minutes ever spent."

This will be Barrington Levy's second time. "As you know, I don't really perform a lot in Jamaica, but Shaggy pull me out. He's like my best friend, a good, good friend of mine." Levy, who rehearsed for his 15 minutes on stage last Tuesday, said.

If the target is met, it will be the largest sum raised by a single staging of Shaggy and Friends. Already there has been a pledge of $US30,000 by Michele and Francois Chalifour from Friends of Food for the Poor and a $5 million donation from Scotiabank.

In just five years Shaggy and his team have already raised more than US$1.5 million for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
