St George's, Garvey Maceo set for cagey contest

If their forms this season are anything to go by, today's ISSA Champions Cup match between St George's College and Garvey Maceo High School could head for penalties as both teams have been defensively sound.

Garvey Maceo, who were knocked out of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition earlier this week, conceded only five times in the 15 games they have played this season.

And with three of those goals coming in the match against Cornwall College last weekend, it is safe to say that this Garvey Maceo team has perfected the art of holding their opponents at bay.

St George's College also proved tough to break down in their 15 games as they have only conceded six.

And with this understanding, assistant coach Marcel Gayle is not taking the Clarendon outfit lightly.

"They are being prepared by a really good coach and they have been playing well all season. Because they just missed out on the daCosta semi-finals that doesn't mean they are not good. They are doing something well because they didn't concede a lot of goals in the daCosta Cup," Gayle said.

Garvey's coach Meron Gordon also admitted that the contest will be close but he believes that his boys are hungrier as they have nothing else to play for.

"Going into tomorrow's game it's a do or die for us. It's our last chance to win something," Gordon said. "St George's have always done well in this competition so I know it will be tough for us. However, as long as we go out there and express ourselves and have fun I know we can get a positive result."

Gordon said his side is mentally prepared to play in the buzzing atmosphere that usually accompanies this type of competition, especially at Sabina Park.

"Couple of our games were very big. I'm not saying they are as big as the Champions Cup but even the game we played against Cornwall last week, the STETHS (playing field) was full to capacity So I think we are getting practice in terms of playing under those conditions so I don't think that it will really affect us," Gordon said.
